At least 50 people, including four children, were injured in the shocking incident near the Liver Building on Monday.

Thousands of Liverpool fans had taken to the streets to celebrate their club’s record-equaling 20th English top-flight title. Amid the jubilant scenes, panic erupted when a grey people carrier suddenly veered off course and ploughed into pedestrians standing along the roadside.
Eyewitnesses described the harrowing moment the vehicle appeared to accelerate directly into the crowd, striking dozens of people. Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and firefighters, responded within moments. A large blue tent was erected near Water Street as the area was sealed off.
Casualties and Response
According to North West Ambulance Service, 27 victims were transported to local hospitals, while 20 others received on-site medical attention. Of those hospitalized, two people – including one child – are reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police condemned the act, describing it as a “horrific incident” but clarified that the event is not being treated as terrorism. The 53-year-old male driver, who is white, British, and from the Liverpool area, has been arrested.
Authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the driver’s motive as investigations continue.
Eyewitness Accounts
Harry Rashid, 48, who was attending the parade with his family, said, “The car came from the right and just rammed into people. My daughter screamed, and then we saw bodies on the ground. It looked deliberate.”
Another witness, Peter Jones, who had travelled from the Isle of Man, added, “There was a loud beeping, and then the car smashed through the crowd. People tried to stop it – the windows at the back were broken. It was terrifying.”
Videos circulating online showed the immediate aftermath, with several injured fans being assisted by first responders. However, police have requested the public not to share distressing footage on social media to protect the dignity and privacy of those affected.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his outrage, calling the scenes “appalling.” He emphasized that such events should be a time of joy and not marred by violence or danger. “Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without fear,” he stated.
