Terrifying Sandstorm Encounter: Karachi to Lahore Flight Faces Severe Turbulence Mid-Air
Date: May 26, 2025
Passengers aboard Flight FL-842 from Karachi to Lahore experienced a nerve-wracking ordeal when a sudden sandstorm struck during landing, causing violent turbulence and near-zero visibility. The incident, which took place on May 24, was captured on video and widely shared on social media, highlighting the intense conditions faced by both the crew and passengers.
What Happened to the Fly Jinnah Flight?
Operated by the private airline Fly Jinnah, Flight FL-842 was making its approach to Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport when it encountered unexpectedly strong crosswinds and a severe sandstorm. The storm created extreme turbulence, dramatically reducing visibility and making landing impossible.
According to reports, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructed the pilot to abort the landing. The flight was then forced to turn around and head back to Karachi to ensure passenger safety.
Passengers Relive the Harrowing Experience
Footage from inside the cabin reveals moments of panic and tension. Passengers were seen gripping their seats tightly, with some praying as the plane was tossed violently by the turbulent winds.
One passenger described the experience to Gulf News:
“The landing seemed routine at first. But as soon as the wheels touched the ground, a powerful sandstorm engulfed the plane. Within seconds, we were airborne again. The next 10 to 12 minutes were some of the scariest of my life. The plane was being thrown around violently, visibility was zero, and it felt like we were caught in a cyclone.”
Similar Weather-Related Flight Diversions
The turbulent incident at Lahore follows other recent weather-related aviation challenges in the region. ARY News reported that another flight from Islamabad to Lahore had to be diverted back to Karachi due to inclement weather conditions.
Just days before, an IndiGo flight traveling from Delhi to Srinagar also faced severe turbulence caused by a violent storm and hail near Pathankot. The situation was so critical that the Indian Air Force had to assist in ensuring the plane’s safe landing.
Aviation Safety in Extreme Weather
These events underline the challenges airlines face when flying through unpredictable and severe weather conditions. Pilots and air traffic controllers work in close coordination to prioritize passenger safety, often making quick decisions to divert or abort landings when necessary.
While such turbulence can be frightening for travelers, it is important to remember that safety protocols are in place to handle these situations, and the skills of trained professionals are crucial in navigating through adverse conditions.
